 |
It all began in 1986, when ten municipalities in Örebro County and the local county council began a joint initiative. |
The tough economic conditions of the times were driving municipalities to look for credit. At the same time, high interest rates were a problem, and the capital and money markets were undergoing far-reaching changes. So although they were intrinsically credit-worthy, the municipalities and county councils still found it tough to find attractive loan rates. |
Stronger together The resolution was to act through a single, jointly-owned guaranteed company: an idea so powerful that word of the company’s successful results soon spread far and wide. Municipalities outside Örebro County clamored to join the scheme. The owners were keen to expanding the organization, but could see this called for a new form of ownership. |
Accordingly Kommuninvest Cooperative Society was formed in 1992 to own the shares in the company and to handle the administration for the "joint and several" municipal guarantees that formed the basis for the company’s high creditworthiness. Thanks to the Society, members could pay their contribution in the form of participation capital, which also made it easier to increase the number of owners. |
| At the same time the company changed its name to Kommuninvest i Sverige AB. |
Unique position on the market
Kommuninvest has developed into acting as a local debt office for the Swedish municipal sector. Today the majority of Sweden’s municipalities are included in the collaboration, which means that the credit market essentially views Kommuninvest in the same way as the Swedish state itself.
|
| This is borne out by the fact that Kommuninvest is the only company in Sweden to receive a double triple A rating from both the internationally-recognized credit rating institutions, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s. |
| The role as a local debt office that benefits society gives Kommuninvest a unique position in the market, as the organization can offer both financing and financial consultation to Swedish municipalities and county councils. |
